Parnelli Jones and Rob MacCachren To Be Honored At Horsepower Ranch For 8th “Baja Legacy” Celebration

~ Event Set For Wednesday, November 18th in Ensenada, Mexico ~
(San Juan Capistrano, Calif.,) ~ Parnelli Jones and Rob MacCachren, two of off-road racing’s most legendary names, will be celebrated next month for the 2015 Baja Legacy celebration at Ensenada’s Horsepower Ranch. Produced by historian Marty Fiolka and off-road entrepreneur Todd Clement since 2003, the Baja Legacy events celebrate the rich tradition of Mexican off-road racing, which officially began with the 1967 NORRA Mexican 1000. Many of the sport’s biggest names (see below) have been inducted into ranch’s Hall of Fame, with the event hosting over 1,000 guests.

Coinciding with the 48th Bud Light SCORE Baja 1000, the Baja Legacy evening at Horsepower Ranch will take place Wednesday, November 18th beginning at 6:00pm and run all evening with food, music and a live induction ceremony.

Located five miles east of the seaside city of Ensenada the 100-acre Horsepower Ranch will also feature some ongoing improvements including a completely remodeled pool/barbecue/outdoor bar and upgrades to the famous Carrera Cantina.

Since 2003, the Baja Legacy celebrations have included vintage off-road race cars (top) and special tributes to the sport’s greatest names. This 2006 image shows inductees Larry Ragland (bottom) and the late Frank “Scoop” Vessels signing specially-made artwork by Bill Brindle III that hangs in the ranch’s Carrera Cantina.

As is Baja Legacy tradition, this year’s celebration will feature a full Mexican-style dinner served from 6:00pm until 8:00pm at the ranch’s revised “Event Area.” The on-stage video presentation will begin promptly at 8:00pm honoring the lasting contributions to the sport by two of its biggest names. Fireworks, historic and current race vehicles, live music and other soon-to-be-announced attractions will make November’s party the largest in years.

For 2015’s Baja Legacy evening two of the sport’s most decorated names will be inducted into the Horsepower Ranch’s Hall of Fame — Parnelli Jones and Rob MacCachren.

MacCachren, the reigning SCORE Baja 1000 overall champion (along with co-drivers Andy McMillin and Jason Voss), is one of the most successful racers in the sport. With over 200 desert, short-course and stadium victories , MacCachren has won more off-road races than any other driver in history.

MacCachren will share the evening’s honors with American race legend Parnelli Jones. Off-road motorsports’ first true international superstar, the 1963 Indianapolis 500 winner gave the fledgling sport of Baja desert racing instant credibility. Jones also teamed with renowned innovator Bill Stroppe to win the 1971 and 1972 NORRA Mexican 1000 races in their legendary “Big Oly” Bronco.

“There is so much to celebrate this November as we relaunch the enhanced Horsepower Ranch with the biggest Baja Legacy party yet,” explained Clement. “Not only are Marty and I getting back together to honor two of the biggest names in off-road racing history, but our group is throwing around some interesting ideas that will add to the party experience. That’s what has made these celebrations so damn fun.”

Now considered a treasure to the entire Baja off-road community, Horsepower Ranch was acquired in August by a new ownership group that will preserve its future by creating a full-service destination resort — while also building on the property’s uniquely Mexican vibe.

Race teams and guests are encouraged to pre-purchase event tickets and advanced t-shirt orders by visiting Event tickets include gate admittance, gourmet Mexican dinner and 2015 commemorative poster. Cost is just $22.00 per person prior to November 13th and $27.00 at the gate. Additional ticket/t-shirt packages are also available.

The history of this amazing property goes back long before today’s modern off-road machines – back to a time when the Hollywood crowd of the 60’s and 70’s came to Baja to indulge in the allure of Mexico. The original name of Horsepower Ranch was “Rancho San Juanito” and it was built as an oasis resort. Americans and wealthy Mexicans spent their weekends lounging by the swimming pool, singing along with the piano player, and carousing in nearby Ensenada.

Throughout the 1980’s and 90’s, the ranch exchanged ownership before laying dormant; waiting for an opportunity to emerge with a new identity. Having been restored to its former glory, today Horsepower Ranch has its roots firmly planted within the racing community and also hosts weddings, parties, and other social events throughout the year. The pool and palapas are favorites during the summer months with an open-air bar and the sweet smell of mesquite.

In recent years Hollywood and racing celebrities have returned to Horsepower Ranch, a list that includes Paul Newman, Sandra Bullock, Patrick Dempsey, Jesse James, Chip Foose along with many professional Indycar and international sports car racers.
