Vehicle driven by racing legends Parnelli Jones, Rick Mears and Walker Evans
December 7, 2011 (Reno, NV) – The Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame welcomes the latest vehicle to the collection – the winning Parnelli Jones Racing 1976 Chevy Off-Road Championship Class 8 Pick Up. Graciously donated by Parnelli Jones, the truck is on display inside the famed National Automobile Museum – The Harrah Collection.
The truck was specially built in 1975 by Vel’s Parnelli Jones Racing with support from Chevrolet Special Vehicles Division and driven by three off-road legends including Rufus Parnell “Parnelli” Jones, Rick Mears and Walker Evans. Both Jones and Mears are Indy 500 winners with Mears decorated four times.
The well-known, recognizable truck won many races in 1975 and 1976 including the Parker 400, Baja 500, Mint 400 and Baja 1000. The truck was so successful in Class 8, that it was moved into Class 2 Open where it defeated the highly competitive two-seat race vehicles and was crowned the SCORE Overall Class 2 Points Championship. Feature specs include a high horsepower, small block Chevrolet engine, B&M turbo 400 automatic transmission, and aircraft quality materials and construction.
2011 Induction Ceremony and Silent Auction Update
Ron Bishop and Rob MacCachren honored as the 2011 Class of Inductees
The Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame 2011 Induction Ceremony and silent auction was a great success. Held in conjunction with The Lucas Oil Off-Road Expo, both events took place at the Sheraton Fairplex Hotel & Conference Center in Pomona, California. Over $10,000 was raised by auctioning off items such as a Mile Marker Winch, A Day in the Desert with Rod Hall, entry into the 2012 Griffin King of the Hammers race and signed memorabilia including a vintage autographed Walker Evans helmet and a collection of Rough Riders posters.
Over one hundred and fifty enthusiasts, friends and family came together to create a close knit industry audience who celebrated the induction of living legends Ron Bishop and Rob MacCachren. These men are characterized by their desire to win, the mastery of their field and the significant contributions made to the off-road industry. To learn more about them, log onto ormhof.org.
The ceremony hosted the largest Inductee attendance to date including: Rick Pewe (2010), Judy Smith (2008), Gil George (2007), Dick Landfield (2007), Sal Fish (2006), Bob Ham (2006), Rod Hall (2005), Ed Waldheim (2005), Walker Evans (2004) and Brian Chuchua (1978).
