Radar Tires Poised to Make History at Baja 1000

ENSENADA, Mexico – Nov., 12, 2013 – Radar Tires enters this weekend’s 46th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 with two goals: win the Class 10 race and earn Radar Tires the Class 10 Unlimited championship title in the tire manufacturer’s inaugural off-road racing season.

Both goals are attainable based on the performance of Mike Johnson and Mike Majeksy, co-drivers of the No. 1031 Radar Tires Buggy. In March, during the SCORE International Baja 250, Johnson and Majeksy earned a third-place Class 10 Unlimited finish. Then Johnson raced solo during the Baja 500 in May and earned Radar Tires’ first long course, off-road racing win. As a result of the two podium finishes this season, Johnson heads into this weekend’s endurance race leading the Class 10 championship by just two points.

This week, Johnson and Majesky have been pre-running the course with the Bronson Motorsports team. The drivers and team have been inspecting the terrain, and setting the race strategy and pit stop locations to ensure they are set and prepared for the main event this weekend.

“I’ve been pre-running the course with Daniel (Mauhili, chief mechanic) and it has been going well,” said Mike Johnson. “I think the race is going to take a lot of patience and we need to make the right decisions and not get too worried about time and speed. If we just hit our marks and take our time, we should be right where we want to be. We’ve got our eyes on the race results and the points standings.”

Johnson and Majesky are scheduled to start the No.1031 Radar Tires Buggy from the fourth position of the 20-entrant class, in an Alumicraft chassis, Class 10 buggy with special non-DOT size 33X10.50R15 Radar Renegade R5 race tires.

“We’ve seen most of the sections and we definitely have our work cut out for us, but we’re looking forward to it,” said Mike Majesky. “They officials mapped out a brutal course and it should be challenging for everyone. Some new sections have been added that we have not been on in a long time so I am looking forward to racing on them.”

The four-wheel start is set for 9 a.m., (PT) on Friday, Nov. 15. The Bronson team projects the race to take 22 to 24 hours.

“We found some great lines and have gone over most of the terrain, so I’m confident in our chances,” continued Johnson. “But this is the Baja 1000 and you have to be patient and not get too wound up in the hype. Tires are going to be an issue for some teams and I don’t think most of them can handle the terrain as well as our Radar Tires.”

The 46th Annual Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will take place on Nov. 13-17, and is being touted as one of the toughest courses in series history. The 900-plus mile event starts in Ensenada, treks southeast through the Baja California peninsula in the Baja Norte state from Ensenada on the Pacific Ocean, then over to San Felipe on the Sea of Cortez, travels south through Coco’s Corner, kisses the Pacific Ocean near Punta Blanco, vectors north into the mountains again through Mike’s Sky Ranch, before finally finishing in Ensenada.

Radar Tires chose off-road motorsports to showcase the Renegade R5 M/T tire, which features open blocks for mud dispersion, deep tread blocks and reinforced shoulders. This tread pattern and rigorous construction is ideal for the surfaces encountered on short course tracks such as Glen Helen Raceway in San Bernardino, Calif., and Firebird Raceway in Chandler, Ariz. as well as the open desert of Baja California in the legendary SCORE Baja 1000, the most iconic of all off-road races.
