Richard Boyle takes overall, Class 1 wins to highlight SNORE Motion Tire Ridgecrest 300

Race winner Richard Boyle, right, and his team, from left, Tony Mather and Kory Kolopuff, celebrate the overall and Class 1 victories after the sixth annual SNORE Motion Tire Ridgecrest 300 run April 13 over a 50-mile layout east of the city.

RIDGECREST, Calif. — Richard Boyle of Ridgecrest turned a time of 4 hours, 35.36 minutes here Saturday to grab the overall and Class 1 titles during the annual running of the SNORE Motion Tire Ridgecrest 300 that was run here Saturday.

In what might seem like the perfect script, Boyle is also the owner of Motion Tire in Ridgecrest, so he not only won a race in his own backyard but was also able to capitalize on the exposure for being the sponsor at the same time.

The second race in SNORE’s 2013 Terrible Herbst Motor Sports Garage drew a field of 83 entries for an event that featured a tough 50-mile course east of here.

Ridgecrest, Calif., charger Richard Boyle won the Class 1 and Overall titles during the annual Motion Tire SNORE Ridgecrest 300 April 13 near China Naval Base in the High Desert of Southern California.

Competing over a rugged 50-mile layout east of the city, the event presented a technical challenge filled with ever conceivable race-ending abutment ranging ruts to dust and even huge boulders that dot the area in what provide the look of Wild West cowboy movies.

“We started off easy because that car just ran the HDRA race last weekend. So it had 250 hard miles on it. We just tried to bet to the finish line and we won it. We will be at the Baja 500 the first weekend of June.”

Cody Freeman of Henderson, Nev., headed the Class 10 category of the Motion Tire SNORE Ridgecrest 300 April 13 at Ridgecrest, Calif.

While it wasn’t known for sure the exact percentage of vehicles that did not finish the race, the DNFs were certainly evident in the final results. Las Vegas automobile executive Steve Olliges of Team Ford may have summed up the event best.

“The race was awesome,” said Olliges, who finished behind Mike Voudouris of Austin, Tex., in the Unlimited Truck class. “We had a really fun time. It was that technical type that Ridgecrest always offers. There were a lot of people pulled off to the side with flat tires. The boulders are all over the place and you had to be careful that you didn’t tear the car apart.”

Voudaris, the defending champion, felt fine after the race.

“A lot of people were saying it was a tough track, but it wasn’t as tough as the Mint 400, that’s for sure,” he said.

Southern California racer Michael Goltz won the highly-competitive Class 9 and pocketed $3,200 for his efforts at the Motion Tire SNORE Ridgecrest 300 April 13.

Race Director Kenny Freeman, whose family was among the early pioneers of SNORE, said the response to the event was excellent.

“This is our sixth year and we’re going to be back again,” said Freeman. “The BLM was very happy with us and they were also very cooperative. They’re really easy to work with and the businesses love having us in town.

Better yet, though, was the positive economic impact the race produced. Combined with the charm that Ridgecrest offers in the High Desert near China Lake Naval Base, the end result is a win-win for all involved.

“Wherever SNORE goes, cities enjoy a great return,” said Freeman. “We love coming here.”

As evidenced by the $15,000 payout thanks to SNORE and KARTEK, it was once again evident that it pays to race SNORE.

Among those receiving top payouts were Class 9 winner Michael Goltz ($3,200)  who was among the drivers who did very well at Ridgecrest.

Justin Smith of Capistrano Beach, Calif., powered to the 1600 win during the sixth annual SNORE Motion Tire Ridgecrest 300 April 13.

Other class winners included Mike Voudouris in Unlimited Truck; Cody Freeman, 10; Ken Tapert, 12; Bree Cloud, 13; Sal Gomez, 1450;  Kelly Suiter, 15; Justin Smith, 1600; Ken Leavitt, 2000; Bruce Frisen, 3000; Jerry Fisher, 5-1600; Dallas Lutrell, 7; Michael Goltz, 9; and Michael Brenner, Stock Bug.

SNORE’s next event will be a night race June 7-9 in the Jean-Primm area of Southern Nevada. The race will be third in the Terrible Herbst Motorsports Garage series.
