The triple digit temperatures at Surprise, Arizona’s Speedworld did little to slow the Supercross.com/Loctite Stronghold Motorsports Team of Jeremy “Twitch” Stenberg, Matt Cook, Garrett Poelman and Larry Job. The first year team emerged from Rounds 5&6 having left a calling card that they are a force to be reckoned with in their respective classes.
Stenberg, in his first full season in the series’ marquis Pro2 class, displayed his rapid ascent into the ranks of the elite during Saturday’s Round 5. From his midpack starting location, Stenberg was up on the wheel as he avoided the continued on track carnage and chaos while he navigated his way through the field. Posting the fourth quickest lap time of the event, “Twitch” made a multitude of passes as he continued his pursuit. With laps winding down and a relentless number of yellow flags and restarts, Stenberg held his spot as he diced with class veterans. When the dust settled, he roared through the checked flag with a career best sixth place finish and more importantly, the experience and the knowledge that he is quickly establishing himself as a contender in short course off road racing’s most competitive division. The next day, a confident Stenberg began his sixth round charge again from midway through the field. Through the first eleven laps of the event, he repeated the prior day’s impressive performance. Unfortunately, on lap twelve Stenberg’s Pro2 suffered a motor failure forcing him off the track and out of the race.
Unfortunately for Matt Cook, Stenberg’s Supercross.com/Loctite teammate, Cook’s results in the final tally where not a reflection of his efforts on the track. While Cook has shown a hard charging style that compliments his speed and skill he spent his weekend challenged by often aggressive contact that is a byproduct of short course off road racing. While forced to beat and bang with the pack to progress to the front, Cook was forced to retire early in Round 5 as his truck succumbed to mechanical failure. The next day was déjà vu all over again as, Cook found himself fighting for progress from the middle of the group. Once again, the severity of the carnage took its toll as Cook’s truck was sidelined in the eleventh lap.
Whereas Cook and Stenberg battled for position and the finish line while overcoming adversity, teammates Garrett Poelman and Larry Job were the picture of constancy as both posted solid results. Job, twice a runner up in the ProBuggy class championship, posted a solid seventh place finish in Round 5 and returned Sunday to just miss the podium in fourth. Poelman’s advancement in the spec SuperLite truck class was on display as he left Arizona with a pair of top five results for the weekend.
