Trick or Treat! Robby Gordon will start first at the Baja 1000

2017 Race-Dezert Baja 1000 coverage sponsored by Method Race Wheels

Yesterday night the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Legendary Baja 1000 begun at 7pm with the first Trophy Truck taking the green flag at Time Trials, one by one the drivers had to tackle the 3-lap loop on the .6 miles of Las Vegas Short Course track.

After some controversy on the SCORE social networks were drivers like Tavo Vildósola, Andy McMillin, Kyle LeDuc and Bryce Menzies showed their discontent for having to spend halloween night “working” instead of being with their families which SCORE replied that they are at mercy of the SEMA schedule and they couldn’t do anything to change it. At the end some of them showed up, some of them not.

Robby Gordon gave his son Max Gordon a unique way of trick-or-treating by having him as a co-driver picking something much better than candy, but the pole position being the fastest with a time of 2:52.73, Rob MacCachren was second with 2:52.73 and Brandon Arthur driving the #31 Truck of Andy and Tavo took third overall with just .28 seconds behind Rob Mac.

Also we have Ricky Johnson driving the C Team AWD TT in 4th, Bryce Menzies 5th, Apdali Lopez will start 12th and two positions below Bj Baldwin on 14th just to mention some of the favorites to win.

On the Legends Trophy-Truck Class only 2 teams classified, Gustavo Vildósola Sr. driving the #21 finished 22th overall but first on his category and Jeff Geiser driving the Twin Engine Trophy-Truck finished right behind Gustavo on the 23th position, worth mentioning that the truck was updated from using twin diesel engines to twin LS’s using race gas.

And the bad news are for Riviera Racing, who was driven by Harley Letner, crashed into one of the walls damaging the steering on the truck. Also the #91 of Terrible Herbst of Brett Sourapas had a bad day rolling his truck on the last turn of the track.

Overall, qualifying was a bit underwhelming. Though no doubt a huge marketing opportunity as part of the SEMA show, it was tough to watch these trucks skate around a short course track. Definitely not an accurate representation of what these trucks are capable of or the most iconic race in off-road racing itself.”
