Tunisia Desert Challenge 2021: a new rally-raid in Tunisia

Tunisia Desert Challenge
5 – 13 November 2021

Dear rally friends,

Yes, we’re back! It has been too quiet because of this bloody COVID-19 but that doesn’t mean we have been sitting still, on the contrary. Today we proudly present a completely new and epic rally-raid: the TUNISIA DESERT CHALLENGE. No loops around Douz, but a linear route with 8 challenging desert stages, almost 2500 timed kilometres and nearly no liaisons, just like you’re used to.

Why did we choose this destination? Up till today, Morocco has not given the go-ahead for events and rallies. That is why we’ve decided to move the Morocco Desert Challenge to 2022 (21 to 30 April). At the same time, we went looking for a destination where we could organise an event this year; a country that was willing to give us guarantees. And that country is … Tunisia.

Looking forward to meet you there from 5th to 13th November 2021

Gert Duson

THE RACE TRACK OF THE TUNISIA DESERT CHALLENGE 2021

After 5 weeks of reconnaissance, our race director Jean-Claude Kaket is now putting the finishing touches to the road books. It will be a phenomenal and challenging rally-raid with dunes, sand and gravel, very different from the stony stages in Morocco. The scrutineering and prologue will start on the island of Djerba on 5th November. After that, the rally caravan will travel through southern Tunisia and settle its rally bivouacs in Ksar Ghilane, Douz and the Star Wars site at Nefta, before turning north and arriving in Monastir.

  • Stage 1: Prologue: Djerba – Djerba: 105km
  • Stage 2: Djerba – Ksar Ghilane: 417km
  • Stage 3: Ksar Ghilane – Ksar Ghilane: 230km
  • Stage 4: Ksar Ghilane – Ksar Ghilane: 287km
  • Stage 5: Ksar Ghilane – Douz: 255km
  • Stage 6: Douz – Star Wars: 380km
  • Stage 7: Star Wars – Star Wars: 262km
  • Stage 8: Star Wars – Monastir: 137km special, 358km liaison

NEW: CLASSIC CAR / TRUCK CATEGORY

New to this rally is the TDC Classics series, a category exclusively for cars and trucks over 20 years old. Classic rallies are clearly on the rise. The Dakar rally started earlier this year with a separate competition for historic rally cars and for the 2022 edition they already had to stop the registrations for these vehicles due to the huge success.

In the Tunisia Desert Challenge (and next year in the MDC) we make room for these legendary Classic rally cars and trucks. Pilots with vehicles older than 20 years will have the choice between participating in the race category or in the “regulatity” category. If you want to participate to the Dakar or other classic rally-raids in the near future, you can already come and practise with us in November 2021 and April 2022.

Needless to say, the TDC is open to all other vehicle categories: cars, buggies, side-by-sides, trucks and motorbikes/quads.
