After an epic journey through Russia the chequered flag has fallen at the 2018 Silk Way Rally. Taking the plaudits from the huge crowds in Moscow’s Red Square are Team Kamaz Master who have secured another truck race victory at their home rally.
It was a dominant display from start to finish by the blue armada of Kamaz who eventually secured all Top 5 places at this Eurasian odyssey. Top of the pile was Andrey Karginov who adds this Silk Way title to his Dakar Rally win in 2014.
“I was hoping to win. Every participant who comes here hopes for a good result.” – Andrey Karginov
Karginov was joined on the podium by Kamaz team-mates Ayrat Mardeev and Anton Shibalovwho finished second and third respectively. Sergey Kupriyanov brought home Kamaz’s gas-powered truck in fourth while Eduard Nikolaev finished fifth in the jet black Kamaz 43509.
The sixth Kamaz driver at Silk Way, Dmitry Sotnikov, had lead the race but a broken drive shaft on stage six ended his title challenge.
Over in the car race there was no catching the MINI of Saudi Arabia’s Yazeed Al-Rajhi who never let his lead slip after claiming top spot at the midway point of the Silk Way. Al-Rajhi finished as runner-up at the Silk Way in 2016 so taking the win this time around felt extra sweet for the desert racer.
This year’s car category runner-up is Qatar’s Nasser Al-Attiyah who, along with French co-driver Mathieu Baumel, battled back from adversity to secure a spot on the podium. After winning the first two stages it looked as though Al-Attiyah was on course for victory in Russia. However, problems with the rear differential on their Toyota Hilux blighted the next three stages and effectively ended the Qatari’s chance of winning the rally.
Always fierce competitors, Al-Attiyah and Baumel fought back to win the penultimate Silk Way stage and rose to second overall. The final result may not be the win they both craved, but it still represents a remarkable recovery and an excellent display of racing know-how.
“I am happy to finish. We had a problem on all the previous stages so second place is a really good result.” – Nasser Al-Attiyah
Now the offroad racers who completed the 2018 Silk Way Rally have been honoured in Moscow’s Red Square, and the party will go on long into the night. Then it will be time to focus on the next extreme test of motorsport endurance, the Dakar Rally next January.
