Alumi Craft racer Luke Johnson had put together an impressive winning streak in the TraxxasTORC short course series taking the top spot in five straight races. When he experimented with a different tire size, his streak unfortunately came to an end at Crandon. In the following rounds at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet, Illinois he went back to his proven set-up and the strategy that worked so well in the past. His strategy is simple, take his Alumi Craft Pro Buggy straight to the front and smoke the field. Luke went back-to-back once more winning both days and taking the Oakley Bomb award for the fastest lap on Sunday.
“We tried something new to see if we could go even faster,” said Luke, “Our streak came to an end but we are focused on winning the championship.” The larger tire diameter he ran did not work with the gearing. You usually get a very small window of opportunity when you are trying to make a pass. If you don’t stick a wheel in there the opening is gone.
“At Chicagoland you have to be aggressive,” says Luke, “Momentum is important. You have to feel comfortable carrying your speed and running right up against the wall. My Alumi Craft gives me that confidence.”
Cooley won the previous round in Tooele, Utah too beating his Alumi Craft teammate Dave Mason. For Mason, it was his 8th straight podium finish of the season.
Cooley’s charge through the field was incredible to watch; passing three cars on the same lap. His back-to-back wins gave him the momentum heading into Sunday’s main event at Glen Helen but a roll over dashed his hopes of going three in a row. Cooley tumbled in the treacherous turn three ending up on the cement K-rail. He was able to keep the car running and took off again without hesitation but he sustained suspension damage from the hard hit on the concrete.
It’s hard to imagine what might have happened in Sunday’s main event had Cooley not crashed but one thing was sure, Alumi Craft racer Bradley Morris looked invincible. He put a move on lap two that was amazing; he dove hard to the inside to go from third to first. He shot out to the lead and never looked back. Not even a pair of full course cautions that allowed his competitors to close up on his rear bumper was enough to make it a contest. Morris won in Pro Buggy and went back-back in his Prolite truck as well. It was an incredible weekend for the young racer.
